Saravanan Welcomes Assurance By MIC Party President

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 25 (Bernama) -- MIC vice-president Datuk M. Saravanan welcomed the assurance by party president Datuk Seri G. Palanivel to remain neutral in the contest for the three posts of vice-president on Nov 30, and said this would ensure a smooth polls.

"I have confidence in the clear and sincere stand taken by the president in the matter, and the delegates will have no problem in electing those whom they feel are really qualified," he told reporters.

Saravanan had earlier presented a cheque for RM1.5 million to SRJK (Tamil) Jalan Cheras.

The money, handed over to the chairman of the school's board of governors, P. Manivannan, is from the RM20 million pledged by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak for 13 Tamil schools facing a critical shortage of classroom space.

Manivannan told reporters the money would be used to build an extension building at the 50-year-old school, which had 400 pupils.

Saravanan said all the candidates contesting the three posts of vice-president were qualified and capable but it was important for the delegates to elect those who could bring about transformation.

Eight leaders are in the fight for the three vice-president posts at the party polls to be held in Melaka.

They are incumbents Saravanan, who is deputy youth and sports minister, and Perak state assembly speaker Datuk Seri S.K. Devamany, former MIC Youth chiefs Datuk T. Mohan and Datuk S. A. Vigneswaran, party treasurer-general Datuk Jaspal Singh, former vice-president Datuk S. Sothinathan, Johor Baharu division leader Datuk S. Balakrishnan and C. Selvaraja.
