Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng (pic) has refused to back down from his “racist grandmother” description of state opposition leader Datuk Jahara Hamid, saying he apologises only for the word “grandmother”.
“If Jahara feels offended by my calling her a 'racist grandmother' because it relates to her gender, then I will simply call her a racist. I apologise for using the word grandmother,” he said in response to her demand for an apology today.
“But she is a racist for playing with the fire of hatred in race and religion through her lies and falsehoods.
“She said I had approved the name change of Pulau Jerejak to Mazhu Island (a Chinese deity) because I approved the Mazhu Temple,” Lim said in a statement.
On Jahara’s query as to why no action was taken against four illegal Chinese stalls in Pantai Bersih, near Butterworth, Lim said: “She, however, fails to mention that no action was also taken against more than four illegal Malay stalls in the same area. There were no double standards.”
Lim added that the state government would not remain silent against lies intended to create racial hatred among its multifaith and multiracial community.
Jahara, who is the Teluk Ayer Tawar assemblywoman, earlier today said she was very upset by Lim's name-calling and demanded an apology from him in the state assembly, saying that he was insensitive and could not take criticism.
She also yesterday questioned on Pulau Jerejak being allegedly renamed "Mazhu Island" and that the state had approved for the building of a goddess’s statue on the island.
Jahara then showed pictures of Batu Maung assemblyman Datuk Abdul Malik Abul Kassim handing over aid to the temple, and an invitation banner of Lim inviting the public to a DAP “Ubah” fundraiser in January this year. – December 10, 2013.
