Don’t reveal name of abducted Taiwanese victim – IGP

KOTA KINABALU: Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar has urged the media not to reveal the identity of the Taiwanese woman abducted at Pulau Pom Pom in Semporna, Sabah last Friday, for the sake of her safety.

He said every report that exposed the victim’s identity could threaten her life as her captors were no less than terrorists from the Southern Philippines, known for their violence.

“What is the motive of the media report today about the victim having connections with top leaders in their country?

“Do the media want to be responsible for the victim if her life is endangered,” Khalid (photo) told reporters after the presentation of appointment certificates to Associate Editors of the Institute of Public Security of Malaysia (IPSOM) in Kuala Lumpur on Monday.

In the incident at 1 am last Friday, a 57-year-old Taiwanese man was fatally shot while his female companion (her own brother has since said that she is married to the murdered man) aged 58 was abducted by a terrorist group from the Southern Philippines.

All national and local media gave the names of the two Taiwanese but on Monday, Taiwanese media reported that the abducted woman had close links with VIPs.

This was picked up by the Malaysian media.

The Taiwanese media also went on to say that the couple was wealthy after having sold off their garment business and were holidaying in their retirement. They have no children.

Khalid did not elaborate further on the case, saying that Malaysian police were working with Philippines police and Aseanpol to secure the release of the woman.

Meanwhile, he said the IPSOM which was introduced by Home minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi last May 20 would conduct studies on public security and provide police and the Home ministry with the feedback.
