Technology should 'empower' women

Glossy women's magazines are "airbrushing away women's interest in technology", and fostering a belief that it is not as cool as fashion, cosmetics and men, according to an article in the Guardian.

Belinda Parmar, founder of technology blog Little Miss Geek and author of the article, feels women's magazines "do not understand how technologies are empowering women's lives".

She said: "When I spoke to one editor about tech articles, she pointed me to a review of an espresso maker.

"Technology is not about domesticity, it is about empowering women and providing practical solutions."

Lindsay Frankel, assistant editor of Glamour Magazine, disagrees that woman's magazines do not cover technology.

She says it is in their articles but "it's not something we need to flag up, saying 'hey here's the technology feature'".

"We have a responsibility to reflect all aspects of women's lives, and if we do a feature about the best apps to best keep your New Year's resolutions, that is woven in to something that's relevant to women's lives," she added.
