MERS-CoV: Penduduk Kampung Bintang Laut dikuarantin

KUALA LUMPUR, 18 April

Bina semula selaput dara terkoyak

Misteri mayat berkafan tepi jalan terjawab

Minimum tiga kesalahan - Polis

Obama offers up to RM16.08 billion to tackle AIDS

US President Barack Obama yesterday pledged up to $5 billion (RM16.08 billion) to fight HIV/AIDS as long as the rest of the world collectively offers double that amount.
Obama urged other countries to replenish the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria as part of a White House event marking World AIDS Day which fell on Sunday.
Obama also announced a new plan to seek a cure for HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, which will see $100 million (RM321.6 million) go towards the development of therapies at the National Institutes of Health.
“Don’t leave our money on the table,” Obama said, calling for a new global effort to spur funding for AIDS research.
“It’s been inspiring to see the countries most affected by this disease vastly increase their own contributions to this fight — in some cases, providing more than donor countries do.
“That ought to inspire all of us to give more, to do more, so we can save more lives.”
The initiative will see Washington donate one dollar for every two dollars collectively offered by other nations up to a US total of $5 billion (RM16.08 billion) over the next three years.
Obama also announced that the US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS relief (Pepfar), a programme started by his predecessor George W. Bush, had smashed through a target of treating six million people.
“I’m proud to announce that we’ve not only reached our goal, we’ve exceeded our treatment target. We’ve helped 6.7 million people receive lifesaving treatment,” Obama said.
Obama also said that The United States planned next year to convene a conference with its global partners to set common goals for battling the disease.
The Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR) welcomed Obama’s announcements, including the $100 million (RM321.6 million) for the search for a HIV cure.
“We cannot achieve the President’s goal of an AIDS-free generation without continued investment in the research necessary to ultimately help us find a cure for this disease,” said Rowena Johnston, amfAR’s vice president and director of research.
The Obama administration says it has improved and expanded on Pepfar — which the president described as a “phenomenal” achievement of his predecessor George W. Bush.
The programme has now reached 1.5 million pregnant women with HIV with antiretroviral drugs to prevent HIV transmission to their children, as reported in AFP.
It also marked a milestone in June with the birth of the one millionth infant born HIV-free because of Pepfar’s support.

'Siti Aishah's religion is between her and Allah'-- sister

KUALA LUMPUR: Among the burning questions 73-year-old Kamarmahtum Abdul Wahab asked her long lost sister, Siti Aishah Abdul Wahab when they finally met on Thursday night was whether she was still a practicing muslim.

However, though Siti Aishah did answer her, the true answer remains uncertain.

"She told me already, but really it is between her and Allah, only god knows,” Kamarmahtum told reporters after touching down at KLIA earlier today.

Kamarmahtum, who was swarmed by the media at the airport, also said that her estranged sister’s decision on whether to return home or stay in England can only be her own.

She expressed that the emotional one and half hour meeting between the two would be the ‘last’ effort the family makes to attempt to persuade the latter to come back to Malaysia.

“She said that she regarded herself as being very needed there, and if she returns to Malaysia it is solely for the family," said Kamarmahtum, who said her sister denied being held as a 'slave' as was being previously reported.

“I also would not persuade her to come back (anymore). At first I thought she has passed away but now we know she is well and now knows what we felt (all these years),” she said.

Kamarmahtum arrived from a flight from Heathrow, London, at about 7.40am with former student activist Hishamuddin Rais.

Siti Aishah, from Jelebu, Negeri Sembilan, left Malaysia in 1968 to further her studies at the London School of Economics in United Kingdom.

However, while she was there, Siti Aishah is said to be hugely influenced by the Maoist movement and ‘extreme’ political activities and abandoned her academics.

Men and women take home different regrets after sex

Casual sex and regrets thereafter are two sides of the same coin but may not be the same for both partners. Regret related to casual sex is different depending on the gender of the participants, according to a new press release.
Researchers from the University of California, Los Angeles, found that while men regret not seizing the opportunity for a quick and meaningless tryst, women are more regretful of jumping into a man’s bed for just a one-night stand. According to a UCLA professor, this stark difference in regret types can be explained by evolutionary pressures that fall above both genders.
“For men, throughout evolutionary history, every missed opportunity to have sex with a new partner was potentially a missed reproductive opportunity – a costly loss from an evolutionary perspective,” said Martie Haselton, a UCLA professor of psychology and communication studies in whose lab the research was conducted. “But for women, reproduction required much more investment in each offspring, including nine months of pregnancy and potentially two additional years of breastfeeding. The consequences of casual sex were so much higher for ancestral women than for ancestral men, and this is likely to have shaped emotional reactions to sexual liaisons even today.”
“These findings are consistent with the notion that the psychology of sexual regret was shaped by recurrent sex differences in selection pressures operating over deep time,” said co-author David Buss, a University of Texas at Austin evolutionary psychologist.
The research was conducted across three studies that involved questioning over 24,000 individuals about their sexual regrets. In the first study, participants were asked to evaluate hypothetical scenarios in which someone regretted taking advantage of or failing to take advantage of an opportunity to have sex. The participants were then asked to rate the how the main character in the scenarios felt on a scale of one to five.
In the next study, heterosexual participants were given a list of sexual regrets and asked to identify the ones they had experienced themselves. The third and final study was a replica of the second one except this time lesbians, gays and bisexual participants were also included.
Researchers found that among women 24 percent were most regretful about losing their virginity to the wrong person, 22 percent were most regretful about cheating on the current partner and 20 percent were  worried about moving too fast sexually in a relationship.
Among men, 27 percent were most regretful about being too shy to make a move on a sexual prospect, 23 percent were most regretful about not being sexually adventurous enough while they were young and 19 percent were most regretful about not being more sexually adventurous when they were single. Only 10 percent of men compared to 17 percent of women admitted being most remorseful about having sex with an unattractive person.
Researchers noted that while the percent of people engaging in casual sex was similar across both genders, women had more intense regrets about it than men. The findings were similar among gay men and lesbian women, and bisexual men and bisexual women, as reported in Dailymail.
“We do not doubt that social norms, such as a sexual ‘double standard,’ play a major role in sexual regret,” said lead author Andrew Galperin, who worked on the project before completing his Ph.D. in psychology at UCLA in 2012. “But these norms themselves might have roots in the ancient selection pressures shaping women’s and men’s minds.”
“One thing that is fascinating about these emotional reactions in the present is that they are often far removed from the reproductive consequences of the ancestral past,” Haselton said. “For example, we have reliable methods of contraception. But that doesn’t seem to have erased the sex differences in women’s and men’s responses, which have a deep evolutionary history.”

Study ties nuts to lower cancer, heart death risk

DALLAS (AP) — Help yourself to some nuts this holiday season: Regular nut eaters were less likely to die of cancer or heart disease — in fact, were less likely to die of any cause — during a 30-year Harvard study.

Nuts have long been called heart-healthy, and the study is the largest ever done on whether eating them affects mortality.

Researchers tracked 119,000 men and women and found that those who ate nuts roughly every day were 20 percent less likely to die during the study period than those who never ate nuts. Eating nuts less often also appeared to lower the death risk, in direct proportion to consumption.

The risk of dying of heart disease dropped 29 percent and the risk of dying of cancer fell 11 percent among those who had nuts seven or more times a week compared with people who never ate them.

The benefits were seen from peanuts as well as from pistachios, almonds, walnuts and other tree nuts. The researchers did not look at how the nuts were prepared — oiled or salted, raw or roasted.

A bonus: Nut eaters stayed slimmer.

"There's a general perception that if you eat more nuts you're going to get fat. Our results show the opposite," said Dr. Ying Bao of Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.

She led the study, published in Thursday's New England Journal of Medicine. The National Institutes of Health and the International Tree Nut Council Nutrition Research & Education Foundation sponsored the study, but the nut group had no role in designing it or reporting the results.
Researchers don't know why nuts may boost health. It could be that their unsaturated fatty acids, minerals and other nutrients lower cholesterol and inflammation and reduce other problems, as earlier studies seemed to show.

Observational studies like this one can't prove cause and effect, only suggest a connection. Research on diets is especially tough, because it can be difficult to single out the effects of any one food.

People who eat more nuts may eat them on salads, for example, and some of the benefit may come from the leafy greens, said Dr. Robert Eckel, a University of Colorado cardiologist and former president of the American Heart Association.

Dr. Ralph Sacco, a University of Miami neurologist who also is a former heart association president, agreed.

"Sometimes when you eat nuts you eat less of something else like potato chips," so the benefit may come from avoiding an unhealthy food, Sacco said.

The Harvard group has long been known for solid science on diets. Its findings build on a major study earlier this year — a rigorous experiment that found a Mediterranean-style diet supplemented with nuts cuts the chance of heart-related problems, especially strokes, in older people at high risk of them.

Many previous studies tie nut consumption to lower risks of heart disease, diabetes, colon cancer and other maladies.

In 2003, the Food and Drug Administration said a fistful of nuts a day as part of a low-fat diet may reduce the risk of heart disease. The heart association recommends four servings of unsalted, unoiled nuts a week and warns against eating too many, since they are dense in calories.

The new research combines two studies that started in the 1980s on 76,464 female nurses and 42,498 male health professionals. They filled out surveys on food and lifestyle habits every two to four years, including how often they ate a serving (1 ounce) of nuts.

Study participants who often ate nuts were healthier — they weighed less, exercised more and were less likely to smoke, among other things. After taking these and other things into account, researchers still saw a strong benefit from nuts.

Compared with people who never ate nuts, those who had them less than once a week reduced their risk of death 7 percent; once a week, 11 percent; two to four times a week, 13 percent; and seven or more times a week, 20 percent.

"I'm very confident" the observations reflect a true benefit, Bao said. "We did so many analyses, very sophisticated ones," to eliminate other possible explanations.

For example, they did separate analyses on smokers and non-smokers, heavy and light exercisers, and people with and without diabetes, and saw a consistent benefit from nuts.

At a heart association conference in Dallas this week, Penny Kris-Etherton, a Pennsylvania State University nutrition scientist, reviewed previous studies on this topic.

"We're seeing benefits of nut consumption on cardiovascular disease as well as body weight and diabetes," said Kris-Etherton, who has consulted for nut makers and also served on many scientific panels on dietary guidelines.

"We don't know exactly what it is" about nuts that boosts health or which ones are best, she said. "I tell people to eat mixed nuts."

'Kangaroo care' key for premature babies

Mothers carrying babies skin-to-skin could significantly cut global death and disability rates from premature birth, a leading expert has said.

Prof Joy Lawn says "kangaroo care", not expensive intensive care, is the key.

The 15 million babies every year born at or before 37 weeks gestation account for about 10% of the global burden of disease, and one million of them die.

Of those who survive, just under 3% have moderate or severe impairments and 4.4% have mild impairments.

Unless there are those breathing problems, kangaroo care is actually better ”

Prof Joy Lawn
London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine
Prof Lawn, from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), said: "The perception is you need intensive care for pre-term babies,

"But 85% of babies born premature are six weeks early or less. They need help feeding, with temperature control and they are more prone to infection.

"It's really only before 32 weeks that their lungs are immature and they need help breathing,

She added: "Unless there are those breathing problems, kangaroo care is actually better because it promotes breastfeeding and reduces infection."

Speaking ahead of World Prematurity Day on Friday, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, who leads the Every Woman Every Child movement, which promotes improvements to healthcare for women and children, said: "Three-quarters of the one million babies who die each year from complications associated with prematurity could have been saved with cost-effective interventions, even without intensive care facilities."

Pregnancy risks
Studies to be published this weekend in the Pediatric Research journal show boys are 14% more likely to be born prematurely - and boys who are premature are more likely to die or experience disability than girls.

Common disabilities include learning disorders and cerebral palsy.

Prof Lawn said: "One partial explanation for more preterm births among boys is that women pregnant with a boy are more likely to have placental problems, pre-eclampsia, and high blood pressure, all associated with preterm births."

She added: "Baby boys have a higher likelihood of infections, jaundice, birth complications, and congenital conditions, but the biggest risk for baby boys is due to preterm birth.

"For two babies born at the same degree of prematurity, a boy will have a higher risk of death and disability compared to a girl.

"Even in the womb, girls mature more rapidly than boys, which provides an advantage, because the lungs and other organs are more developed."
